Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Serum & Moisturizer

Early this year, Clarins released four products infused with organic Leaf of Life extract. The Leaf of Life is a kalanchoe succulent native to Madagascar that holds water in conditions of drought and environmental stress. The leaf of life is also known for its medicinal properties to treat shortness of breath, kidney failure, menstrual cramps, bronchitis and asthma.

In skincare application, Clarins says that the leaf of life activates self-hydration of the skin. The Hydra-Essentiel range includes 3 moisturizers for 3 skin types - the Silky Cream (normal to dry skin), Cooling Gel (oily/combo skin) and Very Rich Cream (very dry skin) - and 1 serum - the Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Bi-Phase Serum. All four products are meant to protect the skin against environmental stressors like pollution, sweat, dry air, humid air, sudden changes in temperature, etc.

I've ben trying two products from the Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Line  - the Hydra-Essentiel Bi-Phase Serum ($56 CAD) and the Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream for Normal to Dry Skin ($46 CAD).

The Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Bi-Phase Serum is a lightweight and refreshing, water-like serum that penetrates deeply into the skin and aids any products on top in sinking in more effectively. I like the serum because it's an easy step. When I apply it to my face, my skin absorbs it immediately. There's no trace of residue but my skin feels soft and slightly hydrated.

Similar to the serum, the Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream is a lightweight product with ultra-hydrating properties. It reminds me of the MUJI Moisturizing Cream but the Clarins moisturizer has a lighter texture with the same level of hydration and is lightly scented. The Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream sinks into the skin fairly quickly as well, so fast that I can even wear it underneath makeup.

Together, both products are a dynamic duo. Since adding the Hydra-Essentiel Serum and Silky Cream into my daily skincare routine, I've found that any dry areas around the sides of my face, chin and forehead have dissipated. (That being said, I do suspect the combination might be a little too much moisture for my skin during the warmer, more humid months.) Moreover, the duo is the perfect amount of hydration for both day or overnight wear. In the mornings, I apply both products and wait a couple minutes before putting foundation over top. I've had no issues with my makeup pilling or balling whilst wearing the duo underneath. Further, the creams don't make my skin any more/less oily at the end of the day.

All in all, two thumbs up for this serum and moisturizer combo from Clarins...particularly in the winter time when my typically oily skin is feeling a little parched.

Have you heard of the leaf of life? Have you tried Clarins' new Hydra-Essentiel range?
