Introducing the Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($33). Available now exclusively at Sephora, the mascara is described as an ultra-volumizing mascara that delivers instant dimension for epic lashes.

As expected with a luxury beauty brand, the Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara has beautiful packaging. The black hexagonal tube is both unique and sleek. It's the kind of simple, chic makeup piece that deserves to be showcased on a vanity rather than hidden in a drawer or bag.

Can I also say that I love the inspiration behind this mascara? The mascara is inspired by the Marc Jacob's first beauty memory of his mother using shavings of a piece of black velvet to create the look of false lashes. Marc Jacobs Beauty made a short visual featuring Winona Ryder!

The mascara wand is slightly hourglass shaped and with "natural" (as opposed to plastic) bristles, which is effective in getting between the lashes. The hourglass curve is meant to place volume at the centre of the lash line. You might want to call this a magicmascara wand. Marc Jacobs says that through an instrumental study conducted on the Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara, 1 strokes of the stuff yields 300% more volume and 3 strokes yields 1800% more volume. These kinds of claims are fun to test out on my lashes because the starting point of my eyelashes is -5% volume

While I don't think that my lashes will ever be 1800% more volumized, there's a number of reasons why the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara makes my lashes look "epic":
(1) It's ultra black.
(2) It doesn't smudge, run or flake unless I watch a very, very sad movie. It does smudge if I wear it for over 12 hours. Otherwise, this mascara lasts through naps, windy days, onion cutting and pretty much anything else. Note that when I wear it on my lower lashes it's a racoon-y mess but it wears well on my upper lashes.
(3) It doesn't droop. With most mascaras, I experience drooping but the Velvet Noir Major
(4) it has layer-able volume. One coat is separated, defined, flared out lashes with a natural amount of volume (as pictured above). The second and third coats make your lashes look like ka-pow - a ton of volume that's a little clumpy but in a way that make your lashes look haute couture instead of hot mess.

Does it lengthen? Certainly. Does it volumize? A LOT. Does it clump? Yes, but in a good way. Does it smudge? Only under some rare circumstances. Does it droop? No. Is it easy to remove? Yes.

Overall, I'm loving it. While drugstore mascaras are my usual jam (with some exceptions), the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara is arguably worth the money if you're looking to splurge a little on a mascara with a lot of impact.
