Along with the new Kat Von D Lock-It Creme Concealer and new shades of the Kat Von Do Lock-It Concealer, Kat Von D Beauty has also released 4 new base makeup brushes - the Edge Foundation Brush ($43 CAD), Edge Concealer Brush ($30 CAD), Setting Brush ($47 CAD) and Precision Powder Brush ($38 CAD).
I've been toying around with 3 of the 4 brushes for the last three months and have finalized my thoughts. All of the brushes are made with 100% cruelty-free, synthetic bristles and feature a pointy stiletto shape inspired by a witch's broomstick. At a media event with Erik Soto (Kat Von D's MUA and Kat Von D Beauty Global Make Up Artist), I learned that the white tips of the bristles indicate if too much or too little product is being used - a cool little detail! Generally, the synthetic brush bristles are soft (akin to Real Techniques Brushes but not as soft as Make Up For Ever Brushes).
The Kat Von D Lock-It Edge Foundation Brush is a densely packed brush that is cut symmetrically on both sides to form a fairly precise tip. The shape reminds me of the Sigma Beauty 3DHD Kabuki brush, which is fair bit fatter. The Kat Von D Lock-It Edge Foundation Brush is ideal for applying and blending foundation for a medium to full coverage. Alternatively, the edged shape is stellar for applying and blending contour under the cheekbone. In essence, it works similarly to the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush but the Edge Foundation Brush has much more versatility.
The Kat Von D Lock-It Precision Powder Brush is a flat, medium density brush with slightly tapered, rounded bristles. For me, this looks and performs a lot like other setting brushes. That being said, it fits nicely underneath my eyes for packing powder over loose powder and the density of the brush is also perfect for doing so.
The Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder Brush is an ultra fluffy loose powder brush. My favourite thing about the brush is the size. While it is a fairly large brush, it's much narrower than other brushes in my collection (i.e. the Luxie 520 Tapered Face Brush). This means that I am able to set my entire face (including my undereyes) quickly and effectively with a light, even dusting of powder
Overall, some lovely brushes. The Precision Powder Brush is decent but not a must-have for me. Out of the three that I tried, the Kat Von D Lock-It Edge Foundation and Setting Powder are truly unique, easy to use, effective base makeup brushes that I'm happy to use on the daily.
