For Fall 2016 (can you believe we're almost there already?), Kat Von D has a few new and exciting launches in face makeup - concealer and foundation and brushes and setting powder, galore!
The Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation ($42 CAD) is still the same. Just 13 new shades (now 30 in total) plus snazzy and sleek new packaging. I really appreciate the great shade selection organized by warm/cool/neutral undertones.
What's brand spankin new is the Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme ($34 CAD), which can be used for concealing, highlighting and contouring and comes in 21 shades including a pure white.

This was my first experience with the foundation and I can say that it's a winner. Light 49 happens to be the perfect shade for my light/medium yellow-undertone skin. The foundation really is everything that it promises - transfer-proof, full coverage, oil-free and fragrance-free.
The foundation sets to a fairly matte finish, and does so very quickly, so blending in small sections is the key. In terms of coverage, it hides EVERYTHING - blemishes, dark spots, redness, tattoos apparently (with the exception of my pesky under eye darkness). And if it doesn't, another layer definitely will. It doesn't hide dry patches, but I don't think it makes them any worse either. My biggest issue with a matte, full coverage foundation is that if you don't wear the whole highlight, contour, blush shebang, your face ends up looking a little dead.
The foundation lasts all day long (12 hours +) but it isn't matte all day long for me unless I set it with a powder or a setting spray, a step which is not necessary if you have normal or dry skin. I also prefer not to set it, because my oiliness gives my skin a slight natural glow/sheen after 6+ hours.
Despite the foundation being extremely full coverage, there are a number of ways to make it look more natural. Using a Beauty Blender or other equivalent sponge gives a significantly more skin-like effect compared to application with a brush or fingertips, as the water in the sponge diffuses the product. Alternatively, you could mix the foundation 1-to-1 with a primer like the Kat Von D Lock-It Feather Weight Primer to sheer it out slightly.
Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme features a pointed doe foot applicator, which is handy for applying product right up to the lower lash line. I was sent the shade L15, which appears a little light in the tube but works just right when I wear the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation in Light 49. The 21 shades are arranged similarly to the foundation with light/medium/dark and warm/cool/neutral.
Kat Von D Lock-It Creme Concealer in Light 15 Before and After
The brand says that the concealer is full coverage and creaseless with 24-hour wear. I can't say that I've worn concealer for 24 hours but the Kat von D Lock-It Concealer Creme does last at least 12 without creasing or bunching up in weird places under my eyes. While I mostly use the concealer for my undereyes, I feel like the Kat von D Lock-It Concealer Creme is full coverage enough and not overly slippy that it can be worn over blemishes.
Full coverage, indeed - comparable to the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and more than the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer. For when you want to look FLAWLESS. Yet it's magically blendable and melds into the skin easily...unlike the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, which I find appears to look cakey and noticeable on the skin, even when blended. The kind of concealer that you can wear with or without foundation.
Creaseless, yes. It doesn't even have to be set with powder to stay put and dries down completely to a natural matte (much less radiant than the likes of the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer or the Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer).
The Verdict? I'm not one for full-coverage foundations but when my skin's feeling a bit icky, I know I can rely on the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation to make me look like my flaws are nonexistent. It's also quite versatile and can be worn as a lighter coverage foundation when combined with other products. As for the Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme, it's also great in terms of coverage but a little heavy when paired with the foundation. I don't think it's a must-have if you have the foundation because that in itself is very high coverage. Regardless, Kat Von D is the queen of high coverage face products so if that's what you're looking for, check these ones out.
Press samples featured. Kat Von D products are cruelty-free. The foundation will be available as of October 2016 and the concealer in July 2016.
