The use of lipstick dates back to Medieval times, yet it was considered sinful at the time to wear lipstick (and other makeup). So, women resorted to at-home DIY concoctions to add a hint of natural stain to the lips. Even Lisa Eldridge's book Face Paint: The Story of Makeup makes reference to these Medieval practices.
While lipstick of all colours and opacity are totally acceptable in today's society, some of us still want that natural, sheer tint of red. Aaaaaand... Lipstick Queen's Medieval ($30 CAD, from Scarlet & Julia) is the product just for that!
Lipstick Queen dubs Medieval as the red for everyone. It really is the perfect sheer red on my lips. I look healthy and awake and totally didn't try to hard when I wear Lipstick Queen Medieval. It's not too dark, not too bright... just right. It's moisturizing and formulated with stuff like Vitamin E and Shea Butter but I find that the hydration wears away quicker than the CoverGirl Oh Sugar! Lip Balms. Like most sheer lipsticks, this one has quite poor staying power, so I find myself reapplying as often as every 2 hours.
Okay. So it doesn't really look like much. It's super natural, subtle, and barely there. And while on most days, that's exactly how I want my lips to look... there are other products that do the same for a mere fraction of the price. I recently reviewed the CoverGirl Oh Sugar! Lip Balms ($7.99) which give a very similar barely there appearance. Sure, Lipstick Queen has a little more finesse when it comes to ingredients and packaging but it's difficult to justify the $30 price tag with similar, cheaper products out there.
Of course, you might be able to find Lipstick Queen for $15 instead of $30 at Anthropologie like Vanessa did... in which case it's totally worth it ;)
